Discord

What is Discord?

Discord is a free voice, video, and text chat application that is used by millions of people these days. And used to talk and hang out with their friends and communities. Discord is used to talk and discuss many things such as :

  • Gaming
  • Programming
  • Art
  • School communities
  • Friends hangout
And much more things

How is Discord built?

The first thing you need to know about discord is open source that means the source code of discord is open to the public so anyone can use it to modify and use as their own work

Discord was released in 2015 and at the time of now, discord is the most popular chat application used by a lot of people. So discord had great success in the past  6 years. Discord was founded by Stanislav Vishnevskiy in 2015 to make it easier for gamers to talk while gaming

Discord Vs Whatsapp

Whatsapp is most used by normal people nowadays because when it comes to mobile discord isn't very popular yet. But Whatsapp only allows you to create one channel in a group like there is only one channel to type messages in a group but in a Discord server there are many channels in a discord server such as you can divide conversations into topics like general, memes, showcase, etc ..

And WhatsApp doesn't allow a lot of moderation features it only allows to let admins post messages as a special moderation feature. But when it comes to discord it allows loads of moderation features here are some of them

  • Moderators can delete anyone messages
  • Moderators can rename members
  • Moderators are able to kick and ban members
  • Moderators can lockdown channels
  • Custom Roles
  • And last but not least discord has a special feature called bots anyone can develop a bot and invite him to a server a bot can do almost anything such as notifications, moderation, alerts, etc.

So as for now, there are no benefits of using WhatsApp, now let's see what are the benefits we get if we migrate from WhatsApp to discord for communication with the ACICTS Society.

  • Moderators can manage member's messages (Moderators can delete if someone posts spammy or inappropriate messages)
  • We can use custom roles such as Artist, programmer, etc.
  • We can make a custom bot to manage moderation
  • We can plan some events to do in the discord's voice channels
  • If someone tries to spam the server we can temporarily stop him messaging in the server without kicking him.
  • in Whatsapp one of another problem we had was we didn't know member's names some members were using their parent's phones, but in discord, they can nickname their names inside the server so they can be in their name when they are inside the server
  • And we can add a role called "Grade role" to everyone so we can easily find every members grade

How should we adapt to Discord?

We can't just delete the WhatsApp group and say to all of the members as come to discord because we are moving into discord, because some members can have problems such as they don't know what is discord, how to use it, they don't have devices that support discord, etc.
So what we can do is we can post a notice as "Our community is moving to discord from next month" so the members already know about discord can easily join the server while the others will be still in the WhatsApp group and the admins of the WhatsApp group can help the others by doing an online session may be to guide the basics of discord and make the UI familiar with them. After all of the members start to use discord we can make the WhatsApp group admins only and use discord as our primary communication platform. We can record a small video about the special features in discord and how to use them and share it among our members as well

Thank you!
